To help businesses stay on top of health and safety guidance, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (Ministry) launched the new Workplace Safety Plan Builder, a free interactive tool that makes it easier for workplaces to create and update their COVID-19 safety plans. The tool was developed specifically to support small businesses and was designed with their input.

During Small Business Week, on Oct. 21, business owners will have the opportunity to learn about occupational health and safety tools and resources at a free small business webinar from the Ministry.

The safety plan builder leads employers through an easy process to create and update an online safety plan that is right for their workplace. It also allows for easy customization and employers who sign up for updates will be notified when information is changed, allowing them to stay up to date with current guidance and requirements.

“Running a small business during COVID-19 is a challenge,” says Tom Welton, Director of Prevention Services and Education Programs at Workplace Safety North (WSN), “and the safety plan builder helps owners create and adjust their plans with the click of a button, and having confidence they’re following the latest health and safety measures for their employees and customers.

“Having a written safety plan is mandatory for businesses permitted to be open under the Reopening Ontario Act. Businesses can connect with WSN if they need further guidance with the workplace safety plan builder.

“Also, many small businesses take advantage of the Health and Safety Excellence program from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, which is a performance-based incentive program where participants can create safer workplaces and earn both financial and non-financial rewards,” says Welton. “As program provider, WSN plans to promote the workplace safety plan builder as a helpful resource for this program as well.”

Businesses can now also access free training for their health and safety representatives through Ontario’s Small Business Health and Safety Training Program. Small businesses will be reimbursed $150 for the representative’s training time.
