ACCO Brands Canada recognized by Workplace Safety North
Each year, Ontario paper, printing, and converting companies are recognized for workplace health and safety excellence. Last year, Mississauga paper converter ACCO Brands Canada won the top provincial award from its health and safety association Workplace Safety North (WSN). The plant, which produces paper products such as calendars, daytimers, notepaper, and coil and stitch notebooks, has 165 employees.
“I work with Dan Suess from WSN on a regular basis,” says Nancy Deacon, Occupational Health Nurse with ACCO. “He comes in to see where we’re at, and keeps me up to date about the new legislation coming out, and what the Ministry of Labour is focusing on.”
Deacon encouraged the ACCO team to apply for the award. “I thought it was time we started applying for awards and, really, Dan encouraged me to do that. Our corporate health and safety director was also very encouraging. It seems like a daunting task because we’re all so busy and have so many things to do, but it was a really worthwhile thing to do.
“It was worth the effort and I know we’re going to have good feedback and extra ideas that we can implement to make our program even better. It’ll be easier next year because we know exactly what we need to be aware of. Our employees are very happy that we won the award, and we’ve had congratulations from many people dropping by and saying they were very pleased that we won those awards,” adds Deacon.
The annual WSN Workplace Excellence Award recognizes the top health and safety performers in Ontario’s mining, forestry, paper, printing, and converting sectors, as well as small businesses in northern Ontario.
