Workplace Safety North (WSN), the occupational health and safety association for Ontario mining, forestry, and paper, printing, and converting sectors, announces a call for entries for the Workplace Excellence Awards.
“Positive role models for health and safety deserve special recognition,” says Paul Andre, WSN Acting President and Chief Executive Officer. “By making health and safety a priority in the workplace, it sends a message to employees, customers, and the community in general, that this company is proactive and a business leader."
The annual Workplace Excellence awards honour health and safety achievements in mining, forestry, and paper, printing, and converting sectors, small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, plus one northern Ontario business from any other industry sector.
“Being recognized with awards like this one demonstrates to our employees and external stakeholders that we have a strong commitment to ongoing improvement in our safety performance,” said a representative of Kidd Operations - Glencore, a former winner of the President’s Award.
Benefits of submitting an entry
WSN Workplace Excellence Awards Program recognizes workplace excellence in health and safety, and the benefits of submitting an entry include:
- Provides companies the opportunity to complete an easy-to-follow assessment of current health and safety programs. Once completed, it allows organizations to clearly see any areas for improvement in their program, and to develop an action plan to improve safety performance year-over-year.
- Offers recognition to all the people in a firm, including employees and supervisors who are actively engaged in improving health and safety performance.
- Reflects a company's commitment to workplace health and safety to the local community as well as the business community.
“The award means to us that we are on the right path,” said a representative of Kruger Inc. Packaging, two-time President’s Award winner. “Participating in the Workplace Excellence Awards is a good way for organizations to benchmark against others. It’s not a question about winning or losing, but where can an organization improve.”
Workplace Excellence Award recognition plaque
Companies that score 80 per cent or more on the self-assessment submit the completed assessment to WSN in order to receive a Workplace Excellence Award plaque for display in the workplace. WSN reviews the self-assessment and scores may be validated by an on-site visit from a WSN Health and Safety Specialist.
All submitted assessments are automatically considered for the President’s Award. Scoring is based on the self-assessment in combination with statistical performance over the past two calendar years. Top scoring firms in Ontario forestry, mining, paper, printing, and converting, small business, and a northern Ontario firm are presented with the President’s Award at the WSN annual general meeting in September.
Deadline for submissions
For mining companies that wish to be recognized with a plaque at the annual Mining Health and Safety Conference, the deadline for submission is March 15, 2019.
For forestry firms in northwestern Ontario that wish to be recognized at the Lakehead Regional Safety Council spring awards banquet, the deadline for submission is alsoo March 15, 2019.
All other companies must submit assessments by June 1, 2019, in order to be considered for the President’s Award.
