Proposals due January 18, 2019
Workplace Safety North (WSN) invites proposals for papers to be presented at its annual Mining Health and Safety Conference to be held April 9 to 11, 2019, in Sudbury, Ontario.
Themed ‘Preparing for high-risk emergencies in mines,’ the 2019 conference celebrates the 90th anniversary of Ontario Mine Rescue.
Ideally, presentation topics will be related to the theme of emergency preparedness or critical mining hazards, however, WSN is pleased to consider other health and safety topics.
Key areas of focus include:
- Emergency preparedness and mine rescue
- Research and innovation
- Safety culture and management systems
- Workplace well-being and mental health
- Hazards specific to underground work
The technical sessions will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2019, and the presentations are a maximum of 30 minutes, including time allowed for participant questions. Presentation proposals are due to WSN by Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.
“Presenting at the conference was an invigorating and rewarding experience,” says Ray Fortin, General Manager of Health and Safety at Cementation Canada. “It gave me an opportunity to give back to the mining community by sharing my knowledge, and it’s also an effective platform to connect with professionals within the industry.”
Tammy Eger, Associate Professor at Laurentian University and Research Chair of the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH), attends the conference regularly.
“If your research will benefit from feedback from the mining industry, or potentially impact occupational health and safety in mining, Workplace Safety North’s conference is an excellent forum for knowledge exchange," says Eger.
Each year, about 300 attendees gather to learn and share their knowledge about mining health and safety, and network with industry professionals.
