Slips, trips and falls safety blitz now underway

Friday, February 01, 2013

Today marks the start of the Ministry of Labour’s two-month blitz focusing on preventing slips, trips and falls in the workplace.

MOL Inspectors will be visiting industrial work establishments and looking for hazards that can cause workers to slip, trip or fall. Focus points will include:

• Same-level falls (e.g. slippery or uneven work surfaces that can lead to slips and trips)
• Falls from ladders, mobile ladder stands and platforms
• Falls from heights

Falls are a major cause of injury and death in Ontario workplaces. Twenty per cent of workplace injuries are related to slips, trips and falls and 27 per cent of fatalities reported in the industrial sectors were the result of workplace falls*.

Employers are required to identify and assess fall-related hazards in their workplace. For all slip, trip and fall hazards that cannot be eliminated, employers are required to inform and train workers regarding these hazards.
