Network and learn from others, improve your health and safety program, and share in potential WSIB rebate

Applications to join the 2014 Safety Group program are currently being accepted by Ontario health and safety association staff up until December 31, 2013. If you’re not already a member, you can learn more about the benefits and opportunities of membership here, including:

  • Safety group meeting members sitting around tableNetwork with like-minded firms interested in improving their health and safety program;
  • Get information updates regarding health and safety legislation, resource material and training;
  • Listen to local speakers on topics of interest to your region;
  • Meet and share health and safety information and knowledge with other firms;
  • Guidance and support in meeting Safety Group program requirements;
  • Share in a potential financial rebate.

The program benefits both firms with well-established health and safety programs, as well as those just starting to develop their program. “Firms with well-established health and safety programs can use the Safety Group program as a gap analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of their current health and safety policies,” says Tom Welton, Director Industrial at Workplace Safety North.

“Many firms have identified gaps in their program based on a comparison review with Safety Group standards. Conversely, those firms just starting out can use program material, and receive support from the local meeting facilitator and other local participating firms to help develop and advance their health and safety program. The Safety Group program is a win-win for all participating firms, and I would encourage all firms to consider joining,” adds Welton.

The Northern Ontario Safety Group is jointly sponsored by the four provincial health and safety associations (WSN, WSPS, PSHSA and IHSA), and currently has staff across northern Ontario promoting the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) Safety Groups incentive program. This program provides an opportunity for participating firms to receive up to a 6 per cent annual rebate on their WSIB premiums based on the Safety Group members meeting program requirements and reducing both lost-time injury frequency and severity as a group.

“I am quite proud of the accomplishments of the Northern Ontario Safety Group firms based on their 2012 rebate exceeding $1.4 million dollars which was shared between 76 participating firms,” says Welton. “Even more impressive, was the significant year-over-year reduction in both lost-time injury frequency and severity.

“The 2012 Safety Group achieved a 14.29 per cent reduction in lost-time injury frequency as a group and, at the same time, reduced lost-time injury severity by 23.80 per cent.  These impressive reductions in injury statistics show the significant impact of the Safety Group program as well as with the significant efforts of committed firms. These results continue to fuel recruitment efforts, and Ontario health and safety association staff are actively promoting the 2014 Safety Group program with a timeline for all applications to be received by December 31, 2013.”
