Workplace Safety North, the occupational health and safety expert for Ontario forestry, mining, and paper, printing, and converting sectors, announces the call for entries for its Workplace Excellence Awards Program.

Open to all clients with predominant business activities in WSN rate groups, including mining, forestry, and paper, printing, and converting sectors, the awards program recognizes companies’ commitment to the prevention of illness and injury.

Why submit an entry?

The purpose of the program is twofold.  First, companies complete an easy-to-follow assessment of their current health and safety programs. Once completed, businesses can then clearly see areas for improvement and develop an action plan. Second, the program provides recognition to firms actively engaged in improving their health and safety performance.

Workplace Excellence Awards Plaque

Companies that score 80 per cent or more on the self-assessment can submit the completed assessment to WSN in order to receive a plaque that can be displayed in the workplace. WSN reviews the self-assessment and scores may be validated by an on-site visit from a WSN Field Consultant.

President’s Award

All submitted assessments are automatically considered for the President’s Award. Scoring is based on the results of the self-assessment in combination with statistical performance of the past two calendar years. Top scoring firms in forestry, mining, paper, printing, and converting, and small business are presented with the President’s Award at the WSN annual general meeting in September.

Deadline for submissions

Submissions can be made anytime throughout the calendar year.

For mining companies that wish to be recognized with a plaque at the annual Mining Health and Safety Conference, the deadline for submission is March 15, 2014.

For forestry firms in northwestern Ontario that wish to be recognized at the Lakehead Regional Safety Council spring awards banquet, the deadline for submission is March 15, 2014.

All other companies must submit their assessment by July 1, 2014 in order to be considered for the President’s Award.
