Mine Rescue Competitions
Mine rescue competitions are typically held every year, giving participants a chance to test their skills and compete against other mines in their district. Through competition, each team undergoes a standardized evaluation. They are given a team assignment and need to complete tasks within a given time frame. The scenarios vary from year to year. District winners go on to compete in the provincial competition. The winners are celebrated at an awards ceremony that also recognizes the hard work and ongoing dedication of these brave volunteers.
2022 Ontario Mine Rescue Provincial Competition - Hosted in Sudbury District
Newmont Musselwhite Mine Brings Home the Hardware
The 2022 Ontario Mine Rescue Provincial Competition was held June 7-9, with the underground tasks hosted by Vale’s Creighton Mine in Sudbury.
The invitation-only provincial event marks the final month of the annual training cycle and challenges the winners of district competitions to resolve an advanced mine emergency. Unlike district competitions held in spectator-friendly hockey arenas with a maze of simulated mine workings, the provincial competition sends teams into an actual operating underground mine.
All spectator viewing is done via camera feed to the surface as teams navigate the mine alone attempting to solve a puzzle of mine hazards. Teams use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to evacuate the workers trapped underground and restore the mine to safe working conditions.
Technical judges are hidden throughout the mine and evaluate teams by a pre-determined list of criteria based on the policies and procedures of the provincial mine rescue guidelines.
The 2022 scenario included the construction of ventilation infrastructure, the application of first aid to injured miners, the use of specialty mine rescue equipment, and the challenge of detecting contaminated mine ventilation and making it safe.
Ontario Mine Rescue is proud to report all seven highly skilled participating teams were able to successfully resolve the emergency, but the strategy and use of safe procedures for each team differentiates them upon evaluation. The provincial champions taking home the coveted gold hard hats are as follows:
