Safe Chainsaw Use In Forestry Mills

The four-hour session is designed to help workers in the safe care, control and operation of a chainsaw. The combined classroom and optional on-site training deals with the unique circumstances of sawmill or veneer operations industries. Using the knowledge, practices, and techniques already developed in the WSN Professional Chainsaw Operation certification course, this shorter course focuses on using a chainsaw safely when cutting logs and lumber in obstruction or jam-up situations.

Following successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the main components/features of a chainsaw, chainsaw safety features, related equipment and accessories
  • Recognize and describe chainsaw equipment standards for safe and efficient operation
  • Describe methods for safe chainsaw operation in dealing with log or wood jam-ups
  • Describe methods for cutting wood under tension/compression, boring and wedging, and kickback avoidance

Intended Audience:

The course is designed for workers and supervisors in sawmill, veneer and other board industries who employ gas-operated or electric chainsaws for clearing jam-ups, trimming and other non-felling or limbing applications.
