Supervisor due diligence is a critical component of workplace health and safety in Ontario, mandated under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Supervisors are legally obligated to ensure that workers operate in a safe environment, use equipment properly, and follow established safety protocols. This responsibility is not only ethical but also a legal imperative that can significantly impact a company’s liability and overall workplace culture.
A day in the life of a frontline supervisor is always full of demands, whether it is to assign work, solve operational issues, and monitor production and performance. The time needed to keep current with health and safety standards consistently competes with other priorities and obligations. While it is a requirement to ensure supervisors are aware of potential and existing hazards related to the work they oversee, industry has recognized a need for ongoing upskilling to maintain up-to-date knowledge on health and safety.
Building from The Competent Supervisor course offered by Workplace Safety North (WSN), a series of options for refresher training have been developed to equip supervisors with the knowledge and best practices they need to fulfil their roles and keep workers safe. The half-day Competent Supervisor Refresher program is offered in both classroom and virtual learning environments. An additional version of the course has been developed in a self-paced e-learning format, providing learners with more opportunities to access the training session at a time and pace that works for them.
Effective supervisor skills are not only beneficial toward minimizing health and safety risks: they contribute a culture of trust and heightened collective morale in the workplace. When workers see their supervisors prioritize safety, they are more likely to report hazards. This proactive approach reduces injury rates, improves productivity, and enhances an organization’s reputation.
