As one of Canada top women in Safety (2023) with over 24 years of experience in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, Cindy Schiewek is the first female operational Director of Health and Safety Services at Workplace Safety North. She oversees an extremely talented team specializing in various areas of health and safety including Industrial Hygiene, Ground Control, Risk Management, Management Systems, Mining Mandatory Skills, and Mental Health. 

During her 8 years at WSN, Cindy has also held the roles of 

  • Senior Occupational Health and Safety Systems Specialist, and 

  • Culture, Learning Development and Audit Specialist. 

She has worked in the Ontario health and safety system for 16 years with various health and safety associations. Her private sector experience as the Safety Officer with Sandvik Mining saw her support the development and implementation of various systems across numerous locations within North America, partake in the global Mining Management System team and a member of the Global Mining Health and Safety Roundtable. 

She also holds an Honors Bachelor of Commerce Degree with a focus in Strategy and Organizational Behaviour and a minor in Psychology, is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, a Six Sigma Green belt and a certified psychological health and safety advisor and is currently competing her master’s in business administration.

Throughout the years, Cindy has worked with various sectors including mining, construction, industrial, health care, government, municipal, farming/ agricultural, First Nations, retail, and tourism. She specializes in 

  1. Management Systems and

  2. Culture. 

Cindy is the architect behind the WSN Internal Responsibility System: Climate Assessment and Audit Tool (known more commonly as the IRS CAAT) created out of the 2015 Ontario Mines Safety Review and applicable to all sectors. In 2018, the Institute for Work and Health deemed the IRS CAAT correlated to health and safety outcomes and is predictive. The tool is now shaping the future of prevention by using the leading indicator data to design and implement targeted interventions.
